Three Keys to Engagement

Everyone is intrinsically motivated to do things that give them a sense of competency, a sense of autonomy or agency, and a sense of social legitimacy (Ryan, Deci, 1985). With the exception of fear-based engagement, these three elements (competency, autonomy, and social legitimacy ) are the key ingredients for keeping anyone motivated to engage in something. Simply put, it keeps them wanting to pay attention to things that make them feel good about them selves (competency), make them feel like they have independent choice (autonomy), and makes them feel socially recognized (socially legitimate).
